Follow along as we reflect on Marc’s remarkable career and personal reboots shaped by science, epidemics, faith, and miraculous recoveries,
A Collision Of Faith, Miracles, And Medicine
When you experience firsthand, the power of faith in healing, it’s hard not to remain hopeful that through prayer and spirituality there are modern day Miracles Among Us. One of the book’s most striking narratives centers on Danny Redfield, son of former CDC Director Dr Robert Redfield, whose catastrophic head injury left him in a deep coma with bleak odds, forcing faith and medicine to stand side by side. Marc recounts consulting trauma surgeon Dr Tom Scalea, who estimated Danny’s survival chances at “less than five per cent,” and said full neurological recovery was something he had “never seen”. Yet the family refused to give up. Dr Robert Redfield and his wife prayed daily over their son; unwavering in their faith, and committed to bringing him home fully recovered.
When science fell short on answers, faith delivered a miracle. Danny’s recovery was so complete that even his brother, a seasoned transplant surgeon and skeptic, could only conclude it was God’s direct intervention. In Dr. Siegel’s reflection, the miracle is not only Danny’s recovery, but the way it forces both scientific certainty and spiritual certainty to confront shared humility.
Dr. Siegel unpacks how modern-day miracles—rooted in faith and prayer—challenge the certainty of medicine and remind us that healing can transcend explanation.
Why Doctors Resist Faith
As most can contest, faith is rarely addressed during routine medical visits. Some attribute this absence to the scientific nature of medicine; believing physicians must remain focused solely on physical findings and shared evidence to support prognosis. Yet, as Dr. Marc Siegel observes, “physicians are afraid that if they bring their faith into the exam room, it’s going to weaken the science.” He firmly rejects this notion, stating, “That’s not true. It makes them better physicians, not worse.” In reality, many doctors hold personal beliefs and even witness what they regard as miracles in their practices. However, they often feel compelled to keep such experiences private. This reluctance may inadvertently limit patient care, as medicine can treat physical symptoms but may overlook the deeper dimensions of hope, fear, and inner struggle—factors that profoundly influence the healing journey
Bridging Science and Faith in Healing
With so many inspiring stories of miracles in healing with faith as the copilot, how do we encourage a level of compassion and spiritual strength from our Physician’s bedside manner? At one point in Dr. Siegel’s life, he was strictly a man of science. This meant being confronted with the humbling experience of encountering hopeful families, only to deliver heartbreaking news. Most likely, the sentiment of so many practicing physicians, that steer away from wishful thinking and stay true to what the statistics suggest. But life isn’t linear and healing isn’t a straight line to wellness. Let’s give others grace; to find strength in prayer and hope in faith as the gateway to miracles.
