AI and High-Performance Computing are driving the global economy—and leaders, from chips to data centers, are trying to keep up and get ahead of the growth curve. The next generation of semiconductor companies, like NVIDIA, have become the poster child of the AI boom, with the microchips and technology that make it all possible. Our guest for this episode of the Reboot Chronicles Show is making waves in how chips need to be designed, manufactured, and integrated at scale in the future.

With the bedrock of tech,  Moore’s Law, slowing down, Silicon Box CEO, BJ Han has been busy revolutionizing semiconductor integration with a next-gen platform called Chiplet technology. With massive investments from Intel, Tata and many others, his team is building a $2 billion facility in Singapore, and a $3.6 billion facility in Italy. Listen in for the inside scoop on how technology is being reshaped to meet global demand, what’s next in the semiconductor driven world we all rely on, and much more.

The Rise Of Chipset Technology

For years the semiconductor industry has relied on System-on-Chip (SOC) tech, which combines a variety of functions into a single chip. This approach as done wonders for driving innovation, but BJ notes that it is reaching the limits of what it can offer. Ten years ago, with a “14 nanometer FAB (short for semiconductor fabricator) people were talking about $2 to $3 billion” investments. Nowadays “everybody’s talking about $20 to $30 billion”, which makes it unsustainable.

This level of unsustainability is what caused BJ and his team to create chipsets. This allows a system to be broken down into smaller, more modular specialized chips that can be manufactured separately, and then later combined into a single larger piece. BJ also notes that they have taken into account supply shortages, which is why he says “We basically use copper and dielectric and we don’t use anything else, making it even that much more sustainable.”

The Future of Chipsets and Quantum Computing

As chipset technology advances, there is growing interest in how it can support emerging fields like quantum computing. While BJ acknowledges that quantum computing presents unique challenges—particularly the need for extreme cold temperatures—he sees a future where chipsets play a role in quantum device integration.

Silicon Box is already working on packaging solutions for space programs, which operate in similarly cold environments. So, by developing materials that can withstand the extreme conditions of space, the company may contribute to making quantum computing more practical.
