As we head into the second half of the decade chock-full of massive change and innovation, The Reboot Chronicles wanted to know how higher education will reboot itself to not just meet our global challenges—but lead the way. While AI has broken the rules of growth and innovation, supercharging most business sectors whether they wanted it or not, most of our institutions are not riding the wave or even keeping up—except for a few.

One of America’s top universities that is ahead of the pack, bucking the trends, and hitting on all cylinders is Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt’s top dog, Chancellor Daniel Diermeier, joins us on this action packed episode with a behind the scenes tour of how they are rebooting higher education and preparing to teach future innovators to make an impact.

An internationally renowned political scientist, management scholar, and visionary business leader, under Daniel’s leadership Vanderbilt has been on a tear, with its endowment booming to $10B and over $1B in external research funding, setting record for licensing revenues—surpassing traditional innovation leaders Stanford and MIT. Listen in as we unpack how he is breaking down culture walls and empowering people with the right to win to drive radical collaboration—and his personal reboot that may help you decide to follow your heart.

Radical Collaboration, AI, And Drug Discovery Breakthroughs

Vanderbilt has always been a leader in drug discovery. Examples include initiatives to use drugs to aid in opioid addiction and even develop drugs to ease memory loss in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Given their massive Biobank, known as BioVU, and the leaps and bounds AI has made in the last few years, these initiatives are only going to get stronger as Daniel notes that “Drug discovery is now being revolutionized through AI and through the use of data science techniques that were not available.” This is where that $1B in funding comes in, to support and expand research like this, and keep up with the technology, like AI, that will make future research better in every aspect.

Building To Maintain Momentum

We have highlighted the Build, Buy, Borrow method of growth hundreds of times on this podcast and want to do so again, as Vanderbilt constantly uses this process to stay ahead of the game. An example is Vanderbilt’s recent launch of the Institute of National Security, which is “led by General Nakasone, the former head of the NSA and Cyber Command.” Furthermore, Vanderbilt is currently building two new campuses, one in Florida that will focus on business, finance, and computer science, as well as one in New York which is going to be more like a mini-Vanderbilt itself.

Rebooting Yourself As A First-Generation Student

Daniels’ personal story is an amazing one, that goes to show it is most important to follow your heart and follow your gut. Daniel is the first of his family to graduate high school, and when he was 16 his “dream was to be a philosophy professor”. At 23, he left Germany with the aid of a fellowship he received from the German government, which allowed him to come to the US, where he talked his way into the PhD program for Philosophy at the University of Southern California.

His dream had come true, and within half a year, he realized that it was not for him. So he pivoted, went back to Germany and through being there when the Berlin Wall fell, he was able to find a new passion in political science and business. Daniel notes “It was the moment when I went back and I decided this is not for me, where you didn’t know what’s going to happen. But, I think you just have to listen to that.”
