With $132 billion in revenue, serving 99% of Fortune 500’s, 1600 retail locations and 135K employees, Verizon has become a dominating global technology company that is investing in transforming the future of business. I invited a good friend and colleague Toby Redshaw Verizon’s head of Innovation/5G for an episode of The Reboot Chronicles to discuss how we can navigate growth and innovation during The Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Marrying 5G and the Co-creation of Innovation

Verizon has developed a three prong business approach to collaborate and meet the needs of business enterprises, governments, nonprofits, educational institutions, and national labs to navigate its growth and innovation.

  1. Verizon Media Group includes media, advertising and technology which help people gain access to entertainment, news, gaming, commerce, and media. Within the media group is AOL, Yahoo acquisitions, and the Riot Film Studios.
  2. Consumer Group is focused dominant brand that consists of the consumer segment for Verizon’s wireless, wireline businesses (yet it’s still here) and wireless wholesale.
  3. Enterprise Public Sector is growing small and medium business, government businesses, wireline wholesale, and Verizon Connect (telematics business).

Betting on 5G and “Trusting Innovation”

One can easily get lost in the understanding of big 5G buzz words. In layman terms…it’s a business and consumer world of inter-connectivity operating in real time and hyper transparent way, driven by not only 5G but the IoT, AI, AR, Cloud and even blockchain and machine learning working collectively behind the scenes. As you listen, you will hear that the real magic is not understanding any of those buzz words, and instead creating products, services and even new ventures on top of those tech capabilities.

What’s Next for Retail

Retailers are adopting 5G related solutions to maintain consumers and acquire new ones. With endless in-store and online applications, smart retailers are partnering with companies like Revieve, which work behind the scenes on a consumers phone, with easy and fun to use apps that personalize and simplify shopping experiences. One thing is for certain, we can expect exponential change over the next five years that will cross over industries such as healthcare, education, retail, and video collaboration.
