In a new age of cybercrime, online theft is far surpassing home thefts, and protecting yourself, your family, and your friends is harder than ever—and it is about to get worse—especially for kids.

I invited Hari Ravichandran to The Reboot Chronicles, the founder and CEO of Aura, an intelligent, proactive platform that protects online identities, accounts and devices to remain safe, private and protected. We also unpacked his new book, Intelligent Safety: How to Protect Your Connected Family from Big Cybercrime, to learn what you can do now.

The Ying And Yang of AI

A serial CEO, Hari knows how to scale organizations that can help people, which is becoming more difficult in the age of AI. He founded Endurance International that combined with Web.com to form New Fold Digital. Ravichandran is also the founder of Jump Ventures which invests in bringing disruptive deals to market and scale.

Ravichandran refers to AI in the world of cybersecurity as a double-edged sword. AI is able to be utilized to keep people’s information safe. However, the same tools are available to the cyber criminals who are using AI in creative new ways to access people’s private information. This is where a company like Aura steps in. Aura leverages AI technology to be able to identify both AI scams and regular ones. Watch this space as it is aggressively evolving daily.

How to Leverage AI Security

Aura makes use of AI to counteract cybercrime before it happens. For example, Aura can listen to calls from suspicious numbers to identify scams and immediately let the customer know. Aura also takes a family-based approach, allowing people to better protect their children and their aging parents. If a scam-likely call goes to an elder client, they can choose to automatically forward those calls to a designated trusted person who can better and more safely respond to the call. Aura also monitors your children’s apps and device use with alerts of unusual or suspect activity.

How You Can Stay Safe

Ravichandran recommended a number of actionable steps anyone can take today to further fortify their personal information and keep it safe. Two Factor Authorization or 2FA is when a user sets up a second line of defense to enter an account. For example, after typing in a password, the user may have to provide a code sent to email or a phone number to access the account. Available on many websites and apps, Ravichandran recommends employing this feature wherever available. He also recommends utilizing password storing and generating apps. Google, for example, automatically makes this available as you sign up for and on to websites. Lastly, to keep your precious smartphone, protected, as it holds all your information, it is important to have a separate email address that you are not logged into on your phone and use that email as the 2FA email for your phone. This way, if someone gets a hold of your phone, you can remotely shut the phone down and the thief cannot counteract this measure.
